Near Trailhead at South Entrance - 1998

I finally got to ride with someone the could show me the best trails to ride at San Angelo State Park at O.C. Fisher Lake.  We started at trailhead at Potts Creek as mentioned in the letter below.  Turns out there are some good trails pretty close to the trailhead.  When you have to opportunity, be sure and go to San Angelo and hit these trails.  Continued below...

Letter from Park Officials:
"Here at San Angelo State Park we are presently in the process of putting together a comprehensive map of the trails. A trailhead structure has been built at the Potts Creek trailhead on the south side of the park and soon one will be built on the north side. Drinking fountains and water troughs have been placed at various locations across the park on the trails. New signage is being placed across the park as well. Many of the trails are now divided between hike/bike and horse/hike but do come back together as multiuse in some areas. Three wooden bridges have been placed in low lying areas on the trails. We hope to have trailside exhibit "you are here signs" placed at various locations as soon as the trails map is complete. We are doing everything possible to make the network of trails here at SASP the most attractive in the state."

If you are interested in challenging you endurance level it is a good place to start.  The trails are mostly single track and long.  I was told that there are over 65 miles of trails that run throughout the park.  I rode from Potts Creek Camping Area to the Bald Eagle Camping Area, which covers most of the trails and I only clocked 12 miles.  Like I said, that is only the trails that are on the map.

One really nice part of this trial is the signs on the trail.  The first time I rode this trail in 1998 I got lost and had to turn around and go back.  I did miss a turn this time too, near Potts Creek, but once I found the turnoff I never got lost again.  Without the signage, the maze of horse and bike trails would certainly get you lost.  You will come across several camping areas that are not in use anymore and don't appear on the State Park maps.  This Map does show some of those areas.  I will be publishing some more pictures soon.  Keep an eye on the "What's New" page for those updates.

See you on the trails,

Matt
